Usually when we say gnarly, we’re talking about something epic like pulling off a difficult barrel ride or wearing a rad retro tee. Today when we say gnarly, we’re talking about the grotesque, unpleasant and unattractive ways plastic is destroying our environment. And since we all want to keep those killer waves, lush forests and epic hidden gems around, it’s time to rethink the way we use plastic.
But why, you ask?
Everyone’s talking about it, but you have yet to know why plastic is so bad for the environment? You’ve come to the right place. Here are only – yes, only – four gross reasons why it’s time to trade in plastic surfing wax and rum-and-coke plastic straws for safer alternatives.
In American alone, approximately 300 million tons – yes, 300 million tons of plastic is produced every year. What’s even more disgusting is that, again in America alone, 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown away every hour – and that’s strictly water bottles.
Add in the fact that over 160,000 plastic bags are used every second around the world, and it’s safe to say that the amount of plastic we use is absolutely atrocious. Unfortunately, you’d think we’d all recycle more but apparently, only 1% to 3% of plastic bags are recycled worldwide.
Have you ever wondered where all of this plastic goes? More than 8 million tons of plastic gets dumped into the oceans every single year. Out of all the trash you find on the ocean’s surface, approximately 90% of it is plastic. That’s about 46,000 pieces of plastic for every square mile. So, the next time you’re riding through an epic barrel and see a trail of plastic following you, you now know why.
To put it into perspective, there’s one area off the California coast that has a floating mass of plastic that is twice the size of Texas. Yes, Texas – where everything is bigger! Research has shown that the plastic significantly outnumbers sea life in this area, which is just tragic.
Another disgusting fact is that 10 metric tons of plastic from the Los Angeles area is carried into the Pacific Ocean each day. Apparently, the plastic isn’t good enough to be around us on land, so they dump it into the ocean instead. It’s inhumane.
With the prior mentioned, it shouldn’t come to you as a surprise that our plastic usage is murdering sea life. One study shows that over one million sea birds and approximately 100,000 marine mammals are killed each year just from plastic found in the ocean.
Back in 2008, a sperm whale washed up dead on the shore. When they did an autopsy, they found that it died as a result of having more than 22 kilos of plastic in its stomach. Since then, hundreds and thousands of animals and marine mammals have been found dead for the similar reasons.
Now, you may not have sea life as your top priority. Perhaps you’re just not a fan of the ocean or environment. However, if you’re a fan of seafood, it’s time to listen up because a recent study found that people who eat seafood regularly ingest approximately 11,000 pieces of plastic each year.
Whether you’re a surfer, seafood lovers or sunbather, it’s time to rethink your plastic usage. The proof is in the facts – facts that will quickly take over the gnarly elements of the earth that we all love, for the bad-kind-of-gnarly that we wouldn’t dare get near… Willingly, that is.
And for that reason alone, Style Has No Boundaries donates €1.50 of every sale to the 'No Mas Plastik' charity.
